Community stories that still leave people their privacy

Logan West is halls, clubs, markets and neighbour networks. It is not a licence to invent a heart-warming quote.

Green-toned newsprint illustration of community ridgelines.

Community volunteering stories on Park Ridge News start from a public fact: a hall opening date, a council venue hire page, a club that already publishes its own notice, a heritage URL that once described a charity drive. Logan City Council lists the Logan West Community Centre at 2 Wineglass Drive, Hillcrest 4118, under the Wineglass water tower — a civic address a lot of western Logan groups already treat as home ground. That is a better first sentence than a made-up neighbour leaning on a fence.

The earlier website ran a photo gallery and a stream of club copy: blankets for families, community service Sundays, markets, gardens. Those URLs mattered to people who shared them. This rebuild keeps the charitable heritage slugs — 48 baby blankets and a long-running infant-feeding support headline among them — but it will not reconstruct attendance numbers or medical testimony. A community paper can say that volunteer sewing and parent-support groups have been part of the local record. It cannot ethically re-publish private family detail from an old CMS.

Park Ridge’s own hall is in the council suburb file: fundraising from 1952, opening on 10 October 1953. Greenbank’s file records a show society using the Teviot Road showgrounds from March 1986, with livestock, crafts and emergency-service displays. Those sentences are enough to explain why a Saturday still fills with stallholders without inventing this year’s crowd size.

During floods, “community” stops being a lifestyle word. The BOM notes on the 2022 Logan–Albert event record school closures, damaged transport routes and 197 council-counted property impacts in Logan. Neighbour-to-neighbour help is real and should be described in general terms: check official road closures before you travel, use published SES channels, do not drive into water. Our flood organising guide is written for that week. Colour pieces that treat a disaster as content are a different, worse genre.

If you run a club, the useful email to this desk is boring: date, venue, who is welcome, link to the public notice. The 4118 podcast heritage URL is kept because the postcode is a real local shorthand, not because we are restaging old interviews. Pitch a guest column through guest posts if you have a documented public project. Use submit a tip for news. Do not send photographs of children and ask us to “make them famous.”

Community coverage also includes the unglamorous civic stuff: illegal dumping campaigns, envirogrants, trainee intakes — all of which live on Logan City Council pages first. We will 301 old promotional posts to this hub or to local government rather than fake a fresh splash. That is how a newsroom stays ready to post without pretending every leftover WordPress slug is still a scoop.

Questions this page answers

Where do community volunteering stories belong on this site?
On this hub and in heritage URLs that already described public charitable work — baby blankets, community service Sundays, hall fundraisers — rewritten so they explain the public activity and point to current official volunteering pages rather than reconstructing private lives.
How do I tell the newsroom about a club or hall event?
Use the tip form with the official event listing, date, suburb and a public contact. We do not publish unsourced ‘community leaders said’ copy.

Public notice, not a rumour

If your group already published an event, send the link. We can file it. We cannot invent a crowd.
